Bench Seating can be used to compliment a locker room or can be used on its own to provide effective changing room layouts where lockers are not required. For example, a gym locker room generally would require compartment lockers with bench seating included in the layout. A school changing room however would generally require the bench seating only as the changing room would normally be locked by a teacher after and before use.

Bench seating generally has two forms; wall bench seating and island bench seating. As the names suggest, wall bench seating is for use against a wall or perimeter, and island bench seating is for use in the middle of a room. Wall bench seating may be supplied as a bench alone or with a coat rail. The coat rail may be supplied separately and can be mounted at any level suitable for the age group being catered for. Where a suitable wall is not available for fixing to, the coat rail can be supplied adjoined to the frame of the bench seating. There are many variations for wall bench seating and include wall-to-floor, floor fixed and cantilever. These three styles form the basis for most bench seating applications and cater for the majority of all installations. Island bench seat is in contrast less complicated. Island Bench Seating can be supplied as single sided or double sided and can be supplied with overhead coathooks, hanging rails and storage shelves. Both wall bench seating and island bench seating can be supplied additional baskets or shelves which are located beneath the bench seat for the storage of shoes.

Bench Seating can be supplied from a wide range of materials, but in the main the frames are generally steel and the seats are slatted from hardwood, softwood, plastic or metal. Bench Seating frames and coathooks can be supplied colour coded to suit the environment application. We will discuss the task of specifying and planning a bench seating installation in future blog posts.

Laminate lockers are available as steel lockers with laminate doors or can be supplied completely manufactured from laminate panels. The use of laminate panels to manufacture lockers with allows the lockers to be used in constant wet environments. Where standard mild steel lockers, and even zinc plated or galvanised lockers will over time normally degrade and rust, the laminate locker will withstand the wet conditions with ease. Laminate, or solid grade laminate as it is also known is impervious to water. In wet changing room environments such as leisure centres, swimming pools or changing facilities located adjacent to shower rooms, the laminate locker ranges available can be easily complimented with matching toilet and shower cubicles in addition to bench seating and changing cubicles.

Laminate Lockers and Laminate Door only Lockers are available in a range of standard sizes and are available with compartment quantities covering the range of compartment lockers. Solid Grade Laminate Lockers are available in a massive range of finishes which vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Locking mechanisms include all the standards for dry changing rooms, but also include stainless steel locking mechanisms for wet area changing facilities. For further information, see the Wet Leisure Locker Installations guide later in this blog.

Wooden Door Lockers are designed to provide the end user with a more up market aesthetic feel to the standard compartment lockers. Wooden door lockers generally are available with one, two, three or four compartments. They are available in a limited range of sizes although 300mm wide x 450mm deep and 380mm wide x 380mm deep seem to be the most generally available. Locking mechanisms available for the wooden door lockers generally includes key locks, hasp and staple locks as well as coin operated locks. The doors themselves tend to be a veneered covered composite with options on the finish. These options generally include Oak, Ash, Beech and Cherry. In some cases, patterned door finishes are also available. The Wooden Door Locker range is more suitable to the office environment where aesthetics are top priority. Due to the limited demand for wooden door lockers, lead times are generally longer than for standard compartment lockers.

Wire Mesh Lockers are designed to provide a secure environment for clothes, boots and tools in industrial circumstances where regular steel lockers will not suffice. The wire mesh lockers are manufactured from a mild steel wire mesh sheet welded to a rod framework and finished with either a bright zinc plating or a hot dip galvanised finish. These coatings allow the lockers to be washed down. Wire Mesh Lockers are available with compartment quantities ranging from one through to six and are available in a range of size options, although all wire mesh lockers are generally 1950mm high. This height includes for a 150mm foot which keeps the base of locker above the floor level and prevents items being stored in the lower compartments coming into contact with the floor, particularly useful if the floor is wet. Wire Mesh Lockers are useful on building sites and can be used to fit out a container to provide site operatives with a secure location for tools or protective equipment required for site access. Wire Mesh Lockers are fitted with a hasp and staple door locking arrangement allowing for a padlock to be fitted at the users discretion. Wire Mesh lockers may be finished as bright zinc or, subject to quantity, be finished with an epoxy powder paint finish.

What are POD Lockers? A POD locker is a circular set of smaller lockers designed to allow for more locker compartments where the available space is confined and cramped. Each POD locker unit is made up from 7 or 11 smaller individual lockers, each called a SEED. Each SEED locker is an individual locker specially designed in a wedge shape to be fitted together to create the POD. The SEED lockers are available with either a 305mm or 460mm front face. The 305mm wide SEED lockers create an 11 SEED POD and the 460mm wide SEED lockers create a 7 SEED POD. SEED lockers are available with one to six compartments. Each compartment is available fitted with standard locking mechanisms and available with the standard colour finishes.

POD lockers are available as a static unit or can be fitted onto a rotating base allowing for units to be placed in the corner of a room or in a small room. When fitted with a rotating base, a grab handle is supplied to fit to the side of the POD to allow ease of rotating the unit.

Disabled Lockers are a derivative of the low locker and the single compartment locker with the exception that they were specifically designed for wheelchair users. The Disabled lockers are generally 1300mm high and have a shelf fitted internally approximately 300mm from the base of each locker. This lower shelf provides a handy storage shelf which is within easy reach of a wheelchair user without straining. Each locker is fitted with a double coat hook generally at the top of the locker. Each disabled locker is available with a range of standard locking mechanisms and is also available finished in a range of colour options.

As an alternative to the bespoke disabled locker, consider using either quarto or cube lockers mounted on top of a work surface. This allows the wheelchair user to approach the locker from the front and the worktop allows the wheelchair to operate is clear space beneath the worktop. The user can then easily access the rear of each locker without straining or twisting.

The Police Locker has evolved from a combination of a single compartment locker and a cupboard. As the police forces in the UK now have an array of additional equipment that they need to carry with them, their storage lockers now need additional capacity. The additional capacity required is for storage of multiple sets of clothing, boots, anti stab jackets and hi visibility clothing. Also, a kit bag is usually required to be stored although this involves the use of seats and stands within the locker layout. We’ll discuss the use of seats and stands later in this blog. The police forces in the UK also use a wide range of other lockers such as personal effects lockers. These lockers are particularly useful for the storage of radios. Bespoke lockers are also available for the storage of CS canisters and batons. The CS canister lockers are generally similar to an eight compartment locker with a special fitment on the inside of the door. This insert allows for the canister to be stored in such a way that when in place, the canister displaces a tag which shows through a hole in the door, allowing for quick checks to be made on the quantity of canisters being stored. Baton storage lockers tend to be high compartment quantity lockers, either a ten or sixteen compartment locker or a personal effects locker.

Archway Lockers are designed primarily to provide both hanging and secure storage. The ideal location for archway style lockers would be a corporate cloakroom. The basic format of an archway locker is to have two lockers, one on either side, and a hanging unit in the centre. The hanging unit assembly is supplied flat pack and is easily bolted to the lockers on site. The hanging storage provided is not normally secure, although a locking chain variety is available. The ideal lockers to use for archway locker units are either four or six compartment lockers. Four compartment lockers also allow additional lockers to be added in the form of quarto lockers. These are normally fitted as a run of three which are located in between the top sections of the two lockers provided. The hanging assembly unit then fits neatly beneath the quarto lockers. Six compartment lockers can also be used with sixto lockers or with just the garment hanging assembly unit. As the lockers used are standard compartment lockers, the range of standard locks and colour options are available although the garment hanging assembly units are normally supplied finished grey.

Perforated Door Lockers are derived from the compartment locker range. The compartment locker doors during manufacture are punched to provide a pattern of (usually) elliptical holes which provide for increased ventilation throughout each locker compartment. Perforated lockers tend to be used in leisure changing areas. The perforations are generally centred on the door but each locker style has a different perforation. It’s always wise to check the exact pattern of perforations. Perforated Door Lockers are normally available as two, three, four or five compartment alternatives although single, six and eight perforated compartment lockers are also available.

Perforated door lockers can normally be fitted with either key operated or hasp and staple locking mechanisms. Coin Operated locking mechanisms may be used, again it is best to check before buying. All perforated door lockers are available in standard colours. To increase the effectiveness of a perforated door locker, consider asking the manufacturer to provide a punched base and punched shelves for the interior of each locker. This method is especially effective when a heating pipe is present underneath the lockers as the hot air from the heating pipe increases the ventilation. To further the effect of forced ventilation providing an increase in air changes, a forced ventilation system can be installed. This forced ventilation system increases drying time of wet garments by upto three times.

Clear Door lockers otherwise known as vision panel lockers or insight lockers are designed primarily to allow each locker compartment to be checked without opening the locker door. These lockers are particularly useful in areas of high security such as electrical retail where pilfering may occur. The clear door locker variety has the door of the locker completely replaced with a clear polycarbonate door. Vision Panel lockers and Insight lockers have a section of the steel door removed and replaced with a polycarbonate section to allow sight access. The clear door lockers are basically a standard compartment locker with a replacement door. Locking mechanisms available for the clear door lockers are limited to key operated and hasp and staple locking mechanisms. Coin operated locking mechanisms are not available due to their size and weight and the loads that these type of locks place on the door itself. Standard colour options for the locker frame still apply. For the similar vision panel or insight lockers, a coin operated or combination lock may be fitted. The standard colour range for frame and doors will still apply.

Clear Door Lockers are available with compartment numbers from one to six inclusive. Vison Panel lockers are available with two, four, six or eight compartments and insight lockers are available with two, three, four, six or eight compartments.
